Genting Hong Kong ships sail again

Meyer Werft is the Papenburg-based company that built the Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish and is scheduled to build two sister ships to the Disney Wish. On March 8, 2018, the vessel's construction officially started with the steel-cutting ceremony held at MV Werften's shipyard in Bremerhaven Germany. Initially, the ship (hull number 125) was allocated to the sister-brand Star Cruises.

A German hospitality group bought the former Crystal Mozart river ship and will launch a new cruise line with the vessel. Recovery efforts in Baltimore continue to make good progress Maryland Governor Wes Moore highlighted in a briefing on Friday afternoon, April 19, reporting that more than 1,300 tons of steel have now been removed from the waterway. While the priority remains on establishing a lager temporary channel to reopen Baltimore harbor, late today they also opened a third temporary channel while the teams are also beginning to converge on the Dali for the effort to refloat and remove the... The German cruise industry magazine An Bord reported that the lower hull of the liner is to be disposed for scrap price. It will also become Disney Cruise Line's first ship to homeport outside of the United States, although the company has not yet revealed where. The ship was originally intended for the waters of China and The Walt Disney Company has expressed interest in finding a home port for one of its ships closer to its patrons in nations like Japan and China.

The roller coaster allows 1+ G (gravitational acceleration almost everywhere on track) and max speed 60 kph (37 mph). Each Spike cart accommodates max two riders (inline seats) and features an integrated throttle control of the speed. Disney also said the exterior of the ship would be adorned in the iconic Mickey Mouse-inspired colors of the fleet, complete with the line's signature red funnels. The Florida-based cruising arm of tourism giant Disney announced late Wednesday that it was buying a massive, half-finished ship that was until recently under construction for Asia-based Dream Cruises. More details about the ship’s maiden voyage, itineraries and onboard experiences will be revealed in the future, according to Disney.

Whether in the shopping mall, the Asian spa, theme park or Cineplex, both action enthusiasts and those seeking tranquillity will more than get their money’s worth. While the look and overall design will undoubtedly be uniquely Disney, here is a look at this mega liner which was tailor-made for Dream Cruises (originally ordered by Star Cruises). The new owners plan to transform the 1989-built vessel into a missionary ship and floating bookshop. The new owners, who also bought the Crystal Cruises brand and other assets, plan to relaunch the luxury company in 2023. The ship, which has not yet been named for Disney Cruise Line, will include the iconic Mickey-Mouse-inspired colors and the classic Disney funnels, just like the other five ships in the fleet.

Disney Cruise Line Confirms 208,000 Gross Ton Global Dream Purchase

Among the vessel features of Global Dream that were being specifically designed for the Asian market was a massive one-and-a-half-deck casino. The line didn't say where it would deploy the ship, but it said in a press release that the vessel would bring Disney's style of cruise vacations to "new global destinations." What exactly will the new ship look like for Disney given its current state of construction? Physically, it will remain the same size, but its planned capacities will be altered.

Meyer Group forms Meyer Wismar to complete Disney's ship Global Dream

MV WERFTEN comprises of three shipyards in Wismar, Rostock and Stralsund in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (MV) and has some of the largest docks and covered fabrication facilities in Europe. The yards are located in a region with an excellent transportation and logistics infrastructure and have direct access to the Baltic Sea. Further investments in a laser thin-plate welding line, cabin manufacturing, state-of-the-art software and other automation are being made to make MV WERFTEN one of the most efficient cruise ship builders in the world. Now under the guidance of Meyer Werft, the vessel is still set to be an impressive 208,000 gross tons, with an approximate guest capacity of 6,000 at double occupancy and as many as 9,500 passengers when fully booked.

One of the more innovative design changes Disney is discussing is the use of methanol for the ship’s fuel. Disney Cruise Line confirmed that it has completed the acquisition of the incomplete cruise ship Global Dream that was being built by MV Werften for Genting Hong Kong’s Dream Cruises when the shipyard and later its parent company went bankrupt in January 2022. The cruise line division of the entertainment giant said it was able to secure the cruise ship at a favorable price and within the corporation’s capital expenditure guidance to investors. Disney is working with Meyer Werft to complete the construction at that MV Werften shipyard in Wismar, Germany.

Disney is also expected to convert some of the staterooms into other spaces as the announced guest capacity for the ship was 6,000 but the Global Dream was originally planned to host 9,000 guests. The fully financed plan detailed how MV Werften would pay all its creditors in the liquidation process, and the plan had been analysed by an independent auditor. It was decided that Global Dream would be the last vessel built by the shipbuilder and the company had stopped taking in any new customers, Mr Morgen said.

Disney said it would work with Germany's Meyer Werft shipyard to complete the vessel, which was being built with specific venues designed to appeal to Asian families. Questions also remain regarding implementation of the line’s rotational dining concept, what will replace the existing casino space, likely an expansion of the Disney’s renowned kids' facilities, and much more. Global Dream was originally ready to install a theme park on deck encompassing waterslides as well as a roller coaster, not unlike the one on Carnival Cruise Line’s latest ships Mardi Gras and Carnival Celebration, but longer. Little more is known about the ship’s design including its interiors, but we do know it will be powered by green methanol, one of the lowest-emission fuels on the market. And a press release did state that "certain" features would be reimagined under the leadership of Walt Disney Imagineering, the parent company’s department in charge of creative development.

On September 11, 2018, at the Warnemunde-Rostock Shipyard was held the vessel's keel-laying ceremony, with which officially started its construction. During the special event was lifted and placed the first keel block (bottom hull section) with length 22 m (72 ft), width 26 m (85 ft) and weight 410 tons. A total of 30 large-sized sections were pre-fabricated and assembled in Stralsund and subsequently shipped to Wismar for final assembly. At Wismar Shipyard's outfitting quay was installed (specially purchased for GHK's Global-class project) a 125 m (410 ft) high gantry crane. GHK was a global entertainment, hospitality, and leisure company based in Hong Kong. It ordered two cruise vessels to be custom-built to serve the Asian market, specifically China.

With Genting’s bankruptcy in 2022, the future of the Global class was in doubt.[6] On November 16, 2022, Disney Cruise Line confirmed it acquired the unfinished Global Dream.[1][7] The second unfinished ship has been scrapped. The vessel was specifically designed for the booming Asian cruise market, the Global Class ship can accommodate about 5,000 passengers in 2,500 cabins based on a twin share basis – and up to 9,500 passengers during holiday peak season. The first section measuring 22 meters long, 26 meters wide and weighing 410 tons, about half of the full keel, marked the start of construction of the largest cruise ship ever built in Germany.

The ship was about 72 per cent finished when the German government and Genting could not agree in December on plans to finance $620 million to help complete it and keep the shipyard in business, according to a letter Mr Kok Thay wrote to creditors in January. Genting reported a record loss of $1.7bn in May as the pandemic ravaged the cruise ship industry. Disney took over the vessel without warranty claims and stated that would complete/rebuild the liner at its own risk and expense, planning to invest ~EUR 1 billion for its conversion. It was commented that the cheap sale could result in a failure of the guarantees given for this shipbuilding project. Reportedly, GHK-Genting had taken out loans of EUR 650+ million from a consortium of 16 banks for Global Dream. To a large extent, the loans' repayment was secured by guarantees from the federal (Germany's) and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state governments.
